First Month of Accutane

Hello Superstars,

I have just finished my first month of accutane! My skin is already looking better, but I wished I had better camera to show you that my skin is not perfect. The first week was probably the most difficult part of the month. Once that period was over, I started adjusting well to the medicine.

If you're wondering what mascara I am using, it is Maybelline Great Lash (Lots of Lashes) and Covergirl Clump Crusher

My breakouts pre- accutane have gone down. Surprisingly, I have not experienced the initial breakout yet. I am normally the person that immediately breaks out when trying a new medicine. This past week I was on my period (sorry for the TMI), and did experience a few pimples around my mouth. It is taking a while for the suckers to go away, but I rather deal with them in a small area than my whole face.

Redness has also been an issue for me. I am use to having a natural red tint on my cheeks, but with the accutane my entire face looks like I was in the shower for too long. This usually happens after I wash my face. Thankfully, it eventually calms down before I have to face people.

As for the dryness, I can handle it. I am only suffering from mild dryness on my lips, hairline, and a little on my ear lobes (I know a weird place). Places I am easily capable of moisturizing. There has been no facial peeling yet, but I do have to keep some places extra moisturized. Also, I am experiencing some irritation. It is mainly on my thighs, back of arms, and back. Basically, the places where it is hard to reach and embarrassing to scratch in public. Thanks to my accutane haul in June, I have been able to keep it under control and relieve me from my itch.

I LOVE that I have not been producing an ocean of oil. There has been plenty of days this month I have gone out for hours, and have not had to worry about the oil and sweat on my face. Even after a workout, my skin looks GREAT.

There have been occasions when I have had back pains. It is not too bad because I am use to the pain from carrying a heavy backpack to school. But the pain is a great excuse to take a break.

The medicine does make me TIRED. I find I must do things to keep me busy, so I won't be tempted to fall asleep.

All in all, my first month experience has been great. My dermatologist has been very pleased with the results, and believes my skin can only get better from here. She did up my dose to 60mg, since I was not experiencing any bad side effects. To all my Superstars on accutane, I wish you luck on your journey. And to the Superstars that are not, always give your skin TLC.

                                                      Love ya,
                                                      Sarah E.
